I heard this expression somewhere recently, and immediately switched: no news before noon.

It’s perfect.

Now my early mornings are all Dharma, all the time—practice and study. Listening to talks and meditating, sometimes going to class online with my sangha at The Center for Mindful Living. (All are welcome. :))

It’s heaven.

I used to look at the NY Times on my phone after meditating. Urgh. Now I listen to the Headlines podcast over lunch. It’s only about 11 minutes, bringing me up to date. Then I switch to a podcast about books, or to a book or audiobook. All good.

Later in the afternoon, I look at the NY Times on my phone, peruse the news, and enjoy all the things—Simbarashe Cha’s charming “Look of the Week” photos, book and movie reviews, recipes, culture columns, and random health/nature articles and good stories. I do the mini crossword and the Strands puzzle (does anyone else play that?) and call it a day. 🙂

I’m still very thoughtful about the news—considering, caring, and responding. With balance. With equanimity. With a grateful, contented heart, and a focus on being here for those in need. Sending a little extra money to the UN World Food Program to help feed people suddenly displaced by war. Giving $5 to an unhoused or under-nourished person on the street in my neighborhood. Hugging my sobbing neighbor who just lost her job.

I’m grateful for the miracle of life. I’m steady. I’m here.
