Helpful wisdom, compassion and care for you

My Mom

In meditation class this morning, there was a conversation about difficult, deeply held patterns installed during sometimes painful childhoods. People spoke of not being seen—especially by their mothers—of a longing that continues since that day, and how cultivating awareness helps. Being a witness, rather than being engulfed in the emotions, helps.

I’m one of the lucky ones, the people whose mother loved them truly and unconditionally, with appreciation for the preciousness of life and each other. The program/pattern she installed in me was kindness and love and care and generosity. She taught me by every word, every smile, every glance, every action, to be a good person and a good mom myself. What an incredible way to learn! From the best. And what a blessing, that has smiled over my whole life.

It’s her birthday today, the 23rd of November! It’s always close to or even on Thanksgiving, the perfect time to be deeply, completely grateful for the beautiful woman who was everything to me. And because love is infinite, love endures, she, and her golden heart, are with me still. 💛

    Jo,
I loved reading this piece. Your mother was a significant beacon of light for me in high school. She always welcomed me into her library office as a most welcomed guest. She was as kind and generous with her smile as anyone I ever knew. That is a gorgeous picture of her – her hair looking exactly as it did (the style and the waves) many years later when I knew her.
Sending Mother’s Day love to you!
